With an overture (i.e., the Introduction), you set strong accents and engage the audience. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> then present some <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">nice<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> melodies to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make the audience familiar with the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> main themes and actors <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the performance<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (i.e., State-of-the-art).<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> then start developing a story <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">always<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">keeping<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">audience&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (i.e., the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reader\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) attention at all times (i.e., a math model, case studies, or a survey design).<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Now, the main action should come (experiments, results). Finally, the culmination raises &#8211; this is something <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">what the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> audience was waiting for (i.e., <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> findings). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Put <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">your<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> best melodies here &#8211; the audience should be impressed and say that this is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">something<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very exciting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and goes beyond <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> what they ever heard (read).<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Before closing, a calm finale comes (i.e., the Conclusion).<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><em><strong>A good abstract is like a TV advertisement for some drugs. The first sentence shows the importance of the problem and the possible adverse consequences if not treated properly. Then, you present the main features of your approach and highlight its major distinctive elements and advantages (i.e., the medicine and its major therapeutic effects). Finally, you summarize significant insights and outcomes of your study (i.e., how the medicine helps to cure and recover). You can use the same logic for writing the Conclusion section of a paper, just adding the statement of some limitations of your work (i.e., possible side effects that should be consulted with a doctor or pharmacy about before taking the medicine). <\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n<h5><em>Making a paper a hit is similar to entertainment industry. It should be understandable to many people and easy-to-read. Its title and trailer (i.e., the abstract) should contain words that many people are interested about. And it should be published at the right time in the right outlet with a high impact. Timing is everything.<\/em><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>About me <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Dmitry Ivanov teaches Supply Chain and Operations Management at Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) where he leads the Digital Supply Chain Lab and is academic director of M.A. <em>Global Supply Chain and Operations Management<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span data-component_type=\"column-layout\" data-component_id=\"column_layout_484958-1297711572\" data-component_title=\"The 51st International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering (CIE51)\"> Prof. Ivanov is an internationally renowned expert in supply chain and operations management, industrial and control engineering, and artificial intelligence. He has made fundamental and influential contributions, particularly exploring <\/span>structural dynamics and control in complex networks with applications to supply chain resilience, Industry 4.0, supply chain simulation, risk analytics and digital supply chain twins. He is co-author of structural dynamics control method. His research coined several seminal academic and practical directions such as the ripple effect in supply chains and supply chain viability. He has applied different methodologies such as optimization, simulation, control theory, and artificial intelligence to a variety of supply chain and operations management problems. Most of his research stems from real practical context and focuses on the interface of supply chain management, operations research, industrial engineering, and digital technology.<\/p>\n<p>He has been <em>teaching<\/em> courses in operations management, supply chain management, logistics, management information systems, and strategic management at undergraduate, master&#8217;s, PhD, and executive MBA levels at different universities worldwide for about 25 years. He has given guest lectures and webinars, presented scholarly papers and has been a visiting professor at numerous universities across the globe. Author of anyLogistix educational complex for supply chain optimization and simulation that is in use at more than 300 universities worldwide. He enjoys being part of students\u2019 learning experience and creating a safe and active learning environment. He sees his job as an educator to equip future industry leaders with working knowledge and skills in management and technology that would shape more resilient, adaptable, and sustainable supply chains and operations.<\/p>\n<p>His multi-disciplinary <em>academic<\/em> background includes industrial engineering and management, operations research, and applied control theory. His educational background includes industrial engineering and management during five years of diploma studies along with supply chain management, artificial intelligence, information systems, simulation, and control theory during PhD and habilitation. He gained PhD (Dr.rer.pol.), Doctor of Science (ScD), and Habilitation (Dr. habil.) degrees. Prior to becoming an academic, he was mainly engaged in <em>industry and consulting<\/em>, especially for process optimization in manufacturing and logistics and ERP systems. His practical expertise includes numerous projects on the application of operations research and process optimization methods to operations design, logistics, scheduling and supply chain management. Prior to joining the Berlin School of Economics and Law, he was professor and interim chair of Operations Management at University of Hamburg.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ivanov&#8217;s <em>research<\/em> makes impact. His papers belong to the most cited worldwide in the areas of supply chain resilience and digital supply chain. For example, he has been the most cited author of premier journals International Journal of Production Research and Transportation Research: Part E in 2020-2025. His research record includes over 500 publications, with over 200 papers in prestigious academic journals, multiple editions of the leading textbooks \u201cGlobal Supply Chain and Operations Management\u201d (four editions), \u201cIntroduction to Supply Chain Resilience and Viability\u201d (two editions), \u201cIntroduction to Supply Chain Analytics\u201d, \u201cIntroduction to Operations and Supply Chain Simulation with AnyLogic\u201d, and several research books such as &#8222;Digital Supply Chain&#8220;, &#8222;Supply Networks Dynamics and Control&#8220;, &#8222;Structural Dynamics and Resilience in Supply Chain Risk Management&#8220;, &#8222;Scheduling in Industry 4.0 and Cloud Manufacturing&#8220;, and &#8222;Handbook of Ripple Effects in the Supply Chain&#8220;. Professor Ivanov\u2019s research has been published in various academic journals, including Annals of Operations Research, Annual Reviews in Control, Computers and Industrial Engineering, European Journal of Operational Research, Expert Systems with Applications, Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, IISE Transactions, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Integrated Supply Management, International Journal of Inventory Research, International Journal of Physical Distribution &amp; Logistics Management, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Technology Management, International Journal of Systems Science, International Transactions in Operational Research, Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, Journal of Operational Research Society, Journal of Scheduling, Omega, Production Planning and Control, Supply Chain Management: International Journal, and Transportation Research: Part E, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>He is a recipient of IISE Transactions Best Paper Award 2021, Best Paper and Most Cited Paper Awards of International Journal of Production Research (2018-2025), OMEGA Best Paper Award 2022, Annual Reviewer Award of International Journal of Production Economics (2020), Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher Award (2021-2025). Ranked #1 in the \u201cTop Scientists in Business and Management in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland\u201d ranking in 2024 published in the <em>Wirtschaftwoche<\/em>. Ranked #1 in Operations Research in Standford-Elsevier 2% Top Scientists List (2022-2025). In 2024 and 2025, ScholarGPS ranked Dr. Ivanov a Highly Ranked Scholar #1 in the &#8222;Prior 5 Years&#8220; category in Supply Chain, Business and Management, and Management Information Systems areas. Listed among Top 100 scientists in Berlin by the capital&#8217;s newspaper &#8222;Tagesspiegel&#8220; in 2025. In 2025, Clarivate recognized him as one of 10 researchers across all disciplines and continents for &#8222;<em>their exceptional research and how their work is addressing real-world challenges and delivering societal impact<\/em>&#8222;.<\/p>\n<p>His research projects have been supported by funding from European Commission (Horizon 2020), DFG (German Research Foundation), IFAF Berlin, and industry. Principal investigator in several research projects on resilience and digital twins including European projects ACCURATE and CERERE (2023-2027) and the DFG Collaborative Research Cluster on Resilience of Global Supply Chains at HWR Berlin (2024-2029).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ivanov is profiled in supply chain and operations management, operations research and industrial engineering. He is passionate about bridging the knowledge of different disciplines and applying it to solution of practically relevant problems. He delivered numerous invited plenary, keynote and panel talks at the conferences and global webinars of INFORMS, POMS, IFAC, IFIP, IFPR, IEEE, CIE, DSI, and Academy of Management.\u00a0 He is leading working groups, tracks and sessions on the Digital Supply Chain, Supply Chain Risk Management and Resilience in global research communities. He is Editor of International Journal of Integrated Supply Management, Editor of Annals of Operations Research, and an Associate Editor in International Journal of Production Research, International Transactions in Operational Research, and International Journal of Systems Science. He is an editorial board member, associate and guest-editor in different journals, including\u00a0 Annals of Operations Research, Annual Reviews in Control, IISE Transactions, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, International Transactions in Operational Research, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Inventory Research, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, International Journal of Systems Science, and OMEGA. He is Chairman of IFAC CC5 &#8222;Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Enterprise&#8220;, former Chairman of IFAC TC 5.2 \u201cManufacturing Modelling for Management and Control\u201d (2017-2023), and Co-Chairman of the IFAC TC 5.2 Working group \u201cSupply Network Engineering\u201d. He regularly presents his research results and has been Chairman, IPC and Advisory Board member of over 70 international conferences in supply chain and operations management, industrial engineering, control and information sciences where he has organized numerous tracks and sessions (including IFAC MIM, IFAC INCOM, EURO, INFORMS, IISE, IFORS, DSI, POMS, OR, IFAC World Congress, IFIP PRO-VE, LDIC, to name a few).
